We’ve spent a lot of time on this stretch of the Texas coast. Here’s what we’d tell a friend who was coming down for the first time — and a few things even the second-timers miss.
Fishing
Rockport earned the title “Redfish Capital of Texas” for a reason. The flats around Aransas Bay hold some of the best bull reds on the Gulf Coast, and the speckled trout fishing is no joke either. Whether you’re wading the grass flats at first light or heading offshore, you’re in the right place.

Rockport Beach
Texas’s first Blue Wave certified beach, right in town. Parking fee required but it’s worth it — 65 picnic sites, pavilions you can rent, a saltwater pool, volleyball, playgrounds, boat dock, and clean facilities. Good for a full day with kids or a quick sunset stop.
Downtown and Arts District
Everything in downtown Rockport is walkable. Coffee in the morning, galleries in the afternoon, dinner without moving your car. The Rockport Center for the Arts is worth an hour even if you don’t think you’re an art person — the coastal light that draws artists here is the same light you’re looking at from the back porch.
Events Worth Planning Around
Oysterfest (spring) — Fulton Volunteer Fire Department fundraiser. Cold beer, raw oyster eating contest, carnival rides. Exactly what it sounds like.
Babes on the Bay (summer) — Largest all-women’s saltwater fishing tournament in the country. Serious anglers, great energy.
SeaFair (fall) — 50+ years running. Four days of live music, food, vendors, and the best people-watching in town.
Rockport Art Fest — 120+ artists, 10,000 attendees, funds the arts center.
Festival of Wine & Food — 75+ wines, live music, local food. Worth building a trip around.
Market Days — Monthly. One of the largest market events on the coast.
Getting Outside
Goose Island State Park is worth a morning. Go see The Big Tree — one of the largest live oaks in the nation — then walk the shoreline. Boat launch on site, and the birding is exceptional. Rockport is a major stop on the Central Flyway; if you’re here during migration season, bring binoculars.

Day Trips
Port Aransas (15–20 min via car ferry) — Gulf-side beach, good dining, great bars, jetty fishing. The ferry ride alone is worth it. Perfect half-day.
Corpus Christi (30 min) — Texas State Aquarium is legitimately excellent. North Beach, La Palmera for shopping, solid restaurant scene.
